Imperfectly me-Learning to let go

Have you ever felt like you have to be perfect at everything? like getting top marks, always looking right, or never making a mistake? I have and I know a lot of others feel the same way too.

There was a time when I believed that anything less than “the best” wasn’t good. Whether it was my art, music or schoolwork, I would constantly push myself to meet impossible standards. I would compare myself which ultimately made me feel inferior.

“Comparison is the thief of joy” Theodore Roosevelt

But here’s the truth: perfection is a moving target. No matter how hard we try, its never truly reachable and chasing it can drain the joy out of things we love.

“Have no fear of perfection, you’ll never reach it” Salvador Dalí

In other words, perfection isn’t the goal, progress is. True creativity and self discovery live in the mistakes, the restarts and the things that didn’t go as planned. Some of my best outcomes have come from the moments of imperfection.

I am slowly learning that striving to do your level best is very different from striving to be flawless. One motivates you while the other drains you. Thus, the most important shift comes when you choose self-compassion over self-criticism.

“You are allowed to be both a masterpiece and a work in progress at the same time” Sophia Bush

So, if you, like me feel the weight of perfection pressing on your shoulders, known this: YOU DON’T HAVE TO CARRY IT. You are allowed to grow slowly. You are allowed to be unsure. And you are absolutely allowed be imperfectly perfect.

Have you ever struggled with perfectionism? How do you cope with it? I would love to hear your thoughts, Lets catch up and start an honest conversation!
